This lesson gently introduces the use of your fingers on the violin in a way that feels safe, relaxed, and achievable. The focus is not on speed or perfection, but on becoming familiar with finger placement and building confidence step by step.

You’ll learn how to place your fingers on the fingerboard with ease, how to keep your hand relaxed, and how to recognise basic note patterns without tension. We’ll explore simple exercises designed to develop coordination, comfort, and control while maintaining a natural hand shape.

This lesson is ideal for beginners and returning players who may feel unsure about using their fingers. There is no pressure to get it “right” straight away — progress comes from consistency, patience, and showing up.

Using Fingers on Tapes

Finger tapes are visual guides that help you place your fingers in the correct position on the fingerboard. When playing, gently place each finger directly on its coloured tape, allowing your hand to stay relaxed and natural.

The tapes help build confidence, accuracy, and consistency, especially when you are first learning where notes belong. They remove the guesswork and allow you to focus on posture, sound, and enjoyment rather than worrying about being “right.”

Over time, as your ear and muscle memory develop, the tapes become less necessary and can be gradually removed. Their purpose is to support your learning, not to rush progress.

The violin has four strings named G, D, A, and E, from lowest to highest. 
They are also numbered 1 to 4, with 1 being the E string and 4 being the G string. 
Learning both names and numbers helps follow instructions and practise with confidence.

The A Major scale is a bright, resonant key with three sharps: F#, C#, and G#.
The notes are:
A – B – C# – D – E – F# – G# – A

It strengthens high finger placement, improves string crossing control, and builds confident tone — especially on the open A and E strings.

Notes

Notes are the musical symbols that tell us which sound to play and how high or low it should be. On the violin, notes are created by playing open strings or placing fingers on the strings, and they are written on the musical staff to guide what we play.
